The final step in Lisa's Bedroom Mini Makeover was to give her nightstands a little style refresh. Accessories are often overlooked, but these are the finishing touches that bring warmth and personality to your space. Shopping at a local thrift store or flea market is a great way to find really unique pieces without spending a fortune. For Lisa's room, I used a combination of items she already owned, and mixed in a few new items from the Park Slope Flea Market, Build it Green!, and Housing Works Thrift. Keep reading for all sourcing details, and I'll reveal the grand total costs for this 4 step bedroom makeover.
I found a really cute pair of ceramic busts at the Park Slope Flea Market, so just for fun, we split them up and gave one nightstand more of a masculine feel while the other side was a bit more feminine.
We started with a thorough decluttering and cleaning. We pulled everything out of the shelves and drawers, and tossed, recycled, or donated anything that she didn't really need. Then we gave the nightstands a good polish with Christophe Pourney Furniture Tonic to restore the luster and shine of the cherry wood. We added a few finishing touches, and voila! - the nightstands look brand new.
I got the ceramic busts, and pink and green flower painting from Fox and Feline NYC at the Park Slope Flea Market. You can definitely bargain at the flea markets, especially if you purchase a few things. I paid $22 total for the busts and painting. The little white vase with pink stripes was like $3 from Housing Works Thrift in Tribeca, and the green jewelry dish was $2 from Build It Green! My sister already owned the rest of the items, but in case you are curious the mini framework house and trees are from 2of2 on Etsy.
We completed this entire makeover for under $800! Here is the total cost breakdown:
Step 1 - New Headboard: $510.99
Step 2 - Bigger and Better Gallery Wall: $127 (new picture frames)
Step 3 - DIY Ombre Lampshades: $65 (new lampshades and craft supplies)
Step 4 - Nightstand Styling Refresh: $27 (for a few additional accessories)
GRAND TOTAL: $730
